What are the tastes of Lithuania?
Get ready to be surprised! We will help you to connect to the soul of this country through its food and the stories behind it. This tour is a gastronomic adventure, a full immersion into Lithuanian cuisine with its fantastic variety of foods, craft beers, locally harvested berries, honey wines and countless seasonal dishes intimately connected to Lithuania’s wild forests, its farms, its numerous lakes and the Baltic sea. In many ways, Lithuania’s food reflects its history dating back to its thriving middle ages: a time full of numerous historical events and a period of prosperity yet simplicity when Lithuania was a true melting pot of cultures, an era full of oppression and at the same time rebirth. We offer a two-day experience in the culinary centre of Vilnius and the former capital Trakai, known for its Karaites community.
During this gastronomic journey you will be able to taste an assortment of different dishes such as the famous zeppelin plate (potato dumpling in the shape of a zeppelin stuffed with meat or cottage cheese), pink and cold beetroot soup (similar to Spanish gazpacho), fried rye bread, salted pastry kibinai (close to Argentinian empanada or Italian panzerotti) brought to Lithuania by the Karaites minority, and of course, Lithuania’s famous bagels which originated in the Jewish community of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
This journey will allow you to experience the incredible tastes and variety of authentic Lithuanian craft beer, the flavour of midus ( Nordic honey wine and the oldest alcoholic drink in the world), delicious cheeses from happy, free-grazing cows, and the ancient traditions and small secrets of smoked meat and fish.
You will come to understand that poppy and hemp plants not only are a nice decoration but also one of the bases for understanding Lithuanian dishes. Many other curiosities will be revealed about how various plants, seeds, flowers and crops enhance and are used to create a Lithuanian culinary experience. And of course, at the end of your days of exploration, you could enjoy magnificent dinners in the finest restaurants of Vilnius.
